Seven Regional Coroner Law Re-vitalization Workshops

Between 2005 and 2009 A2Justice organized seven regional coronial system re-activation workshops in various states of the Federation. These included the Kano Coroner Reform workshop (March, 2005) which drew participants from Kano State alongside neighbouring states of Kaduna, Katsina and Niger states. Others include the Jos Coroner Reform Workshop (September, 2005); Owerri Coroner Reform Workshop (October, 2005) – with participants from Imo, Anambra and Abia states; Port-Harcourt Coroner Reform Workshop (January, 2006) with participants from Rivers, Cross Rivers and Akwa-Ibom states; Markurdi Coroner Reform Workshop (February 2009) with participants from the host Benue State as well as Nassarawa, Taraba and Plateau states; Anambra Coroner Reform Workshop (May, 2009), and Abuja Coroner Reform Workshop (October, 2009) with participants also from Kaduna state. In all, reform advocacies from the workshops covered 16 states of the Federation.

Although only two states (Lagos and Cross-River states) have revised their existing laws, legislative reform processes are at critical stages in these states while efforts are now being directed (under the project to Strengthen Protection against Extra-judicial Killings aka the SPEOK project) to institutionalize coroner inquest proceedings under existing laws in Rivers.
