On the 26th of November, 2009, Access to Justice held the 9th in the series of Coroners Reform Workshops, aimed at strengthening respect for human life, at the Federal Capital Territoy (FCT) Abuja. in attendance at the workshop were several key stakeholders, including the Inspector General of Police, IGP Onovo, several Judges, (including the Chief Judge of the FCT) and Magistrates within the FCT, members of the Nigerian Bar Association and a cross section of members of the public.
As part of its mission to promote and strengthen respect for human life in the country, Access to Justice has organized a series of workshops and other advocacy measures in the various states in Nigeria aimed at bringing about a reform of the existing Coroner system in the country. The workshops which have so far been held in eight states of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja are designed to build popular awareness amongst all the relevant stake holders and also amongst the general public about the need for a reform of the existing Coroners System laws in the respective states. Since the inception of these workshops in 2001 and following the numerous advocacy measures adopted by Access to Justice, considerable progress has been made in some states of the Federation as some of the states have passed their new Coroners System laws, which have since come into effect. In April and May 2007, Lagos and Cross River States respectively, successfully passed new Coroners Laws.
