Court Awards 20 Million Naira Damages Against The Police For The Unlawful Killing Of Joseph Azubuike

A2Justice in its effort and campaign against extra-judicial killings in Nigeria and to ensure that law enforcement agencies are held accountable for their arbitrariness and excesses, particularly, as it relates to sanctity of human lives, filed a Fundamental Right Action on the 31st of August, 2012 to challenge the unconstitutionality, illegality and wrongful killing of one Joseph Azubuike (Deceased) by some officers of the Nigeria Police.
After about a year and six months of filing the action, the Honourable Justice Musa Kurya of the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos on the 7th day of March 2014 delivered Judgment in favour of the relatives of the deceased.The Court while awarding the sum of N20 Million Naira against the police held that the police brutally and unlawfully killed Joseph Azubuike.
Joseph Azubuike was until his life was snuffed out a businessman resident in Italy and only came to Nigeria briefly to see his loved ones. He was reported to have been gruesomely killed by the police on the 12th of May,2012 at the Monalido Night Club, Apapa, Lagos.

Investigations revealed that one Inspector Usman, Corporal Alex, Corporal Adewale & 2 others police officers now at large were the police officers who killed the deceased person.
